Kulman Ghising is finally leading the Ujyaalo Nepal Party as chairman after facing a split with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The unity between those two parties only lasted for less than two weeks after certain disputes over leadership positions, representation seats and some other organizational problems. This comes just after three days Ghising resigned as a minister in the Sushila Karki government to dive into politics.
Following the split right away, the central committee meeting declared him the chairman of the UNP.

At the press conference held at the party office on 10th January 2026, Ghising informed that the consensus is broken.
He said,
“It is wrong to have a big bargaining with RSP. I was very much in unity. Today was my last day as a regular member. We told our central committee friends to adjust but the main issues were inclusiveness, federalism, and complementarities. We came after giving up everything. However, after staying engaged for a long time, the Ujyaalo Nepal Party has suffered a great loss. Today they announced the dissolution of the agreement and informed me. It was a painful 12 days of unification for us.”
Former Ujyaalo Nepal Party patron Ghising alleged that RSP had brought the leaders and candidates by holding party entry programs at various places. Further, he accused RSP of taking their sacrifice as weakness. The newly appointed leader of UNP stated that he will be raising candidates from all over the country. He said
“We will run the election campaign day and night.”
On the other hand, RSP leader Shishir Khanal who was trying to negotiate with Ghising’s team accused him of neglecting the original agreement. He said,
“The sole reason the UNP walked away from the agreement was that it could not agree on the distribution of portfolios. It is a setback to Mayor Shah’s longstanding effort to bring alternative political forces under a single platform.”
