Kulman Ghising, the Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation who is also in charge of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development has resigned from his post.
Appointed in the “interim neutral government” last year in the month of September after the Gen Z revolution, Ghising was considered as the third most powerful Minister among the interim Sushila Karki’s council of Ministers.
The former minister who dominantly led the Nepal Electricity Authority and ended the long persisting “loadshedding” in the country resigned from the ministerial positions on Wednesday, 7th January. He went to the prime minister’s official residence Baluwatar during the evening and submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Ghising was declared as the patron of the newly formed Ujyalo Nepal Party which later entered an agreement of unification with the Rastriya Swatantra Party on December 29 last year. After the two side agreement he became the top ranked vice president of the RSP. However, he still claims that he has not formally joined or held any position in any other political party.
Mr. Ghising later held a press conference at the Ministry of Energy and announced his resignation late night on Wednesday.
He said,
“Although my name is mentioned in the agreement reached between the Ujyaalo Nepal Party and the Rastriya Swatantra Party, that agreement has not been formally implemented so far.”
Serving as a minister for 115 days he finally decided to quit the cabinet amid pressure on him to leave the government after becoming RSP vice president. His position in a non partisan government reflected as if the government belonged to a single political party and that made PM Karki send him a request to quit his position. However, Ghising claimed that he was not a member of any party during an event on 6th January.
He said,
“During this time, I have worked honestly for the country. I thank Prime Minister Karki and Gen Z for this opportunity.”
Furthermore, PM Karki directed three cabinet ministers to step down claiming their active involvement with political parties. Apart from Ghising, she asked Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta and Minister for Information and Communication Jagdish Kharel to resign from their respective positions. The Karki government was formed as a result of the Gen Z movement which is solely a “civilian government” that works free from any political influence.
