An active lifestyle, regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and hormone therapy if needed can effectively reduce post-menopausal problems.

An active lifestyle, regular exercise, balanced diet, regular health checkups, and hormone therapy or medication if necessary can effectively reduce problems after menopause.

This is the most important approach. It has no side effects and can be adopted by everyone. There is no hassle of repeatedly consulting a doctor for this.

For bone health, a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is important. Exercise is necessary to strengthen weight-bearing muscles. Proper nutrition and exercise help maintain bone density and muscle mass.

Regular exercise can also improve mood, sleep, and weight control. Likewise, yoga, relaxation, and meditation can help reduce stress and manage anxiety and mood swings. Avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol may reduce possible triggers of hot flashes.

Use of Medication
This can be more effective, but it also has side effects. Taking medication without medical consultation may create additional problems. The main issue in menopause is a decrease in the hormone estrogen. Therefore, this hormone can be used as treatment. This is called Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms (such as hot flashes). HRT can be used in different ways.

In the Nepali market, it is available as oral tablets and vaginal creams. Estrogen–progestogen combination therapy can also be used. Since estrogen use carries risks such as endometrial cancer and deep vein thrombosis, it must be used very carefully and in a balanced manner. In recent times, alternatives to hormone therapy are also being used.

Antidepressants such as paroxetine and venlafaxine have been shown to reduce hot flashes by 40–60 percent. Other options include fezolinetant and gabapentinoids, but these are not always easily available or suitable for everyone.

It is important not only for the woman herself but also for the family and society to understand this change. She has not changed as a person; rather, her body is adjusting to a new hormonal state. Husbands, children, daughters-in-law—everyone should understand this. More than advice and instructions, support and understanding are needed.

Accepting it, understanding it, and taking proper care are important for both physical health and mental balance. From a health perspective, this is not only a crisis. It is also a time of opportunity—for protecting bones and heart health, strengthening mental well-being, and developing self-awareness and self-compassion.

Ultimately, menopause is not a matter of shame or weakness. It is a natural, biological, and important chapter in a woman’s life. If society and family understand, if the woman herself accepts it, and if proper medical guidance is received at the right time, this phase can bring stability, confidence, and balance into her life.
